Why can't you recycle thin plastic containers
even if they have a #1 or #2?
You must first think of recycling as a
business. Without a market, there is no possibility of
recycling a product. Even though plastic bottles and tubs
might have the same number inside their recycling symbols,
they are not really made of identical material. Bottles are
produced through one kind of molded process and tubs through
another, and these two processes require different plastic
mixtures that melt at different temperatures. If these
plastic containers are recycled together, the result is a
mixture of material that has no value in the Oklahoma
recycling market. Even when plastic tubs are collected
separately, there is no value to Oklahoma
recyclers/manufacturers.
Why can't you recycle glass?
Again, you must first think of
recycling as a business. There must be a buyer to make
recycling feasible. It is cheaper to produce new glass
in Oklahoma than it is to use recycled glass in
manufacturing. Until this changes, it is not possible to
afford the costs to separate, store, and transport this very
heavy material. KEG continues to look for methods of
recycling glass.
Why can't I recycle the plastic lids?
The lids to plastic bottles are made
of different grades of plastic than the bottle itself. These
grades of plastic are not recycle in our area. The little
plastic rings that are left behind from a lid are an
acceptable evil because they are so small. Each bale
is allowed a very small percentage of contaminants.
